Aurora Borealis Magnetometer Predictor
Space Weather Magnetometry
Designed for expedition photographers and magnetospheric researchers operating across Alaska, Northern Canada, and Scandinavia, this platform tracks incoming Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and High-Speed Streams (HSS) from coronal holes.
Telemetry Signals Analyzed
- Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) Bz Vector: Real-time alerts when Bz turns strongly southward (-10 nT or lower), triggering magnetic reconnection.
- Solar Wind Speed & Density: In situ particle velocity calculations from DSCOVR and ACE spacecraft positioned at L1 Lagrange point.
- Ground Magnetometer Deflection (dH/dt): Local flux changes measured in nanoteslas (nT) to predict sub-storm expansions and dynamic aurora pillars.
Expedition Field Strategy
When the planetary Kp index exceeds 6.0 and local ground magnetometers show negative deflections greater than -300 nT, visual curtains and sub-auroral red arcs (SARs) become visible at lower latitudes. Deploy field gear with clear northern horizon views away from local light interference.
